Many say that this is the weakest book of the Reconkers series, but I don’t agree. The first book was best, the second was the weakest, this landed somewhere in the middle. If you don’t agree though let me just say that being the WEAKEST novel doesn’t nessacarily mean it is the worst one of the series. This story was built on action, characters and setting. It was not at all a plot-driven story, rather it was the investment I had in the characters that kept me reading. The reason this book was the weakest of the series (I call it finale syndrome) was because it relied on plot when the other books didn’t. Instead of blissfully fluffing together a fast-paced adventure, we needed logical closure, and that’s where Calamity fell flat. The plot was always a bit shaky, and it was most noticeable in this book. It was always VERY far fetched - but hey that’s why we sci-fi and fantasy lovers read things like that don’t we? Anyway, it had to end somehow, and although the ending was confusing and stark in contrast to the rest of the series (easy to follow and fun) this required investment in the actual plot. I thought the ending was bizarre because it opened up the door for future books, or did it? It’s hard to tell and it didn’t give us complete resolution. The book was good, very Good in fact, but because it suffered such a bad case of Finale Syndrome, it can only get four stars in my opinion.
Like most great series I’ve read, I’m sad to see that the Reckoners series is over. Brandon Sanderson did not disappoint with the conclusion to the series, Calamity. In it, we find David, Megan and who’s left of the Reckoners team banding together to try to bring Prof back from the darkness of having embraced becoming an Epic. Megan did it (or is trying), so why can’t they do it for Prof, too? After they accomplish that plan, next they hope to destroy Calamity. But it is easier said than done, and more Epics and danger are ready to stand in their way.I’ve been told that the first book is being optioned for a movie, and I could not be more excited. Reading this series is akin to watching a Marvel movie. It has super-villains pitted against the heroes/Reckoners, so a lot of fighting and action occurring, with displays of supernatural abilities. We also have our main character, David, who is strong, smart, and determined… but also a bit silly and naïve. He provides much needed humor to what can be dark circumstances. There’s also a lot of camaraderie amongst the Reckoners, and chemistry between David and Megan. To me, everything comes together in just great storytelling. I would, and have, recommend this series to people who enjoy YA, action, sci-fi/fantasy, and superheroes with a twist.
David is determined to prove that the Epics can be redeemed. Prof, the most powerful Epic out there, is his target. This was my least favorite of the series by far. I was pretty disappointed as the first book started out so strong. But the ending was very unsatisfying. The beginning and middle of the story was fine, filled with David's hilarious metaphors and fun-snappy language between the Reckoner crew that had me smiling. But then its the climax of the story, and I just felt that it was completely rushed. The idea was there, but the execution was off.
The twists in this novel were inspired and kept me hooked until the very end. My only complaint is that I expected more fromBrandon Sanderson in regards to his "magic system." In his other novels like Mistborn his magic systems usually make logical sense and follow a pre-established set of guidelines. However, the longer this series goes on it seems like the powers, technology, and characters get a bit more thrown together. It seems like Sanderson didn't take the time to develop his characters and world building that are trademark Sanderson. This series seems to merely to be the product of a dinner conversation where one person asked the other "what would the world be like if Superman were a villain?"TLDR; Solid novel. Substandard world building from Brandon Sanderson.
"Calamity" is the third book in "The Reckoners" series, following "Steelheart" and "Firefight". "The Reckoners" series postulates an Earth like our own that has been overshadowed by an astronomical phenomenon that people have called "Calamity". The effect of this is that certain humans have developed super-powers. Unfortunately, this has not turned them into the Justice League. Just the opposite. They've taken over the planet, dividing it into fiefdoms, held according to how powerful their super-power is. And, they rule by fear and ruthlessness. The Reckoners are the human sixth column against the super-beings.This series has well-developed characters and an intricate plot. It has more twists than a pretzel, and it is sometimes hard to figure out who the bad guys are. It is a delightful read, but really needs to be read in order. If this is the first book you have encountered in "The Reckoners" series, look up "Steelheart" and purchase it first.Given that, I highly recommend this book. It is not suitable for young readers due to violence, but I'd consider letting teens over 14 years old read it.
This series as a whole is so so good. This finale was my least favorite of the trilogy only because I felt like the overall conclusion played it a little too safe for my liking. I still however though everything else was top notch. I love how Brandon Sanderson keeps increasing the tension. The world building expanded again as we made Ildithia our new playground for the story. Ildithia was so interesting. I never even would have imagined a town that is constantly shaping and reshaping from salt. It's such a cool concept. All in all I absolutely loved Brandon Sanderson's take on heroes and villains.Steelheart-5/5Firefight-5/5Calamity-4/5Reckoners Trilogy-14/15
